Cause of Acne Scarring

An inflamed acne cyst, pustule, or papule can cause acne scarring. The process begins when a pore or follicle becomes engorged with excess bacterium, oil, or dead skin cells. The pore begins to swell and eventually break. If the break in the pore occurs near the skin's surface, the lesion is typically minor and won't take very long to heal completely. Inversely, if the break in the pore occurs deep within the wall of the follicle, the lesion is usually m ore serious. Infect matter from the cyst, pustule, or papule can overflow into the dermis, destroying healthy skin tissue. The skin reacts by forming new collagen fibers in an attempt to repair the damage. The new collagen does not provide as smooth an appearance, and to make matters worse - the body will often overproduce this collagen. This can leave a mass of raised tissue (aka scar) on the skin's surface. Acne scarring can also be depressed, due to the loss of tissue and trauma experienced as a result of the bursting cyst, pustule, or papule.
